I ended up picking @wallabag to replace . It does everything I used from Pocket, including (via a small detour) syncing with my Kobo e-reader.
Bonus points: it's and you can self-host (or you can just use their service which is located in Europe) so that's one less American tech dependency

With Mozilla shutting down Pocket, folks are calling for open-sourcing it. There's this “pocket-monorepo” project which seems to contain the majority of server code? github.com/Pocket/pocket-monor

Some parts are missing, notably the parser, but I've found it useful for reverse engineering their GraphQL API, particularly the public API proxy.
Anyone can confirm what else is missing?

If you import 10 years worth of bookmarks from Pocket to @readeck you'll likely end up with a bunch of broken ones where the original articles aren't online anymore. I definitely did, so I made a little script to help clean them up.

So the Instapaper service is something I find useful, and so far it's free.

I'd *like* to pay something like $20 a year for it. That's kind of my "comfortable" price point for a service. But they are looking for $60.

I don't think this is a $60/year service. I'd be grumbly with $30 and OK with $20.

But if it's $60 or $0, I guess it's $0 for now.

Steven Rosenberg »
@passthejoe@ruby.social

I always found kind of clunky, but I did find things I wanted to read in their daily emails. I used Firefox, and it was part of the ecosystem, so I was OK with that.

There seemed to be extra clicks involved with saving to Pocket. It wasn't as seamless as it needed to be.

Now with Instapaper, which I'd heard of but never used, I like the ease of using the browser extension and phone app to add links to my "feed" (or "paper," I guess).

Hearing about ArchiveBox and hosting it on my own server was one of the best things I discovered this year.

I now have my own internet archive :)

I imported all my data from and will do the same with many articles saved in my browser's favourites lists.

ArchiveBox allows you to take snapshots of a web page and save them in PDF, text and many other formats.

And on my own server, enough with relying on others.

If you’re looking for a Pocket replacement, the good news is that there are tons of open source options available - if you’re willing to self host. And if you’re going that route, why not try a federated bookmarking platform? I know of two.

Might be a little biased as I’ve contributed once or twice, but Postmarks works great. Yes, it was built with Glitch in mind but I run it as a Docker container myself.

With Mozilla announcing they're shutting down Pocket I thought I'd mention that for a while I've been working on a little bookmarking web-app called Readlynx. It will be open-source and self-hosted, but I hope to look into providing hosted instances in the future.

It's a single binary to download and run, which I'm hoping will make it super easy to get started. If this interests you, follow me or the hash tag for updates. 1/2
