@acidiclight @aks The key property with here is: I get to choose my own blast radius.

Do I need the latest features of package X? (This has, at times, been the case for me with ) OK fine, build it, flatpak/docker/whatever. Otherwise, my system gets to stay stable.

John Goerzen »

@acidiclight @aks I have Raspberry Pis running in some difficult-to-access locations, including one that isn't at my home. I run (NOT for many reasons) on them and they happily hum along with unattended-upgrades. They just work, day in and day out. Happiness.

I also run Debian on my home server with 96GB of RAM and a ZFS installation. Same reason. It Just Works. I don't have to mess with it. 4/

John Goerzen »
@jgoerzen@floss.social

@acidiclight @aks If I'm going to build a Linux box to be used by someone that isn't a Linux expert, I'm going to put on it every time. Why? ! My own parents bought a laptop from System76. After getting so shy about applying Ubuntu updates because of the number of times they caused breakage, I finally reinstalled it with Debian and they are happy. Once every couple of years, I will help them with a major upgrade... otherwise, it Just Works which is what we all want. 3/

John Goerzen »
@jgoerzen@floss.social

@acidiclight @aks being means that I can cron unattended-upgrades and all my systems get security updates automatically while I sleep. And they don't break. "Rolling" distros, or even FreeBSD, is incapable of this because by forcing you to take new versions to get security updates, you also introduce things can can change behavior in ways that break systems: everything from changes to config files to output formats and new bugs. 2/

John Goerzen »
@jgoerzen@floss.social

@acidiclight @aks OK folks, developer -- and author of non-Debian FLOSS here.

All this dogpiling on volunteer developers that produce a quality distribution is unkind. And wrong.

Just because YOU don't find a use case compelling, doesn't mean NOBODY does.

Because is in the sense of "remains the same from day to day", this is tremendously useful in a lot of use cases. I'm going to lay some out here. 1/

I ran into a situation today when trying to add a third-party repository to the Debian package sources using the now deprecated `apt-key` method, which will throw up all kinds of errors.

The preferred method now is using `gpg` directly for working with keys and keyservers.

So, , in its infinite wisdom, has decided that an initramfs 247MiB in size is what it wants. Well, OK..? But now I can't fit two of them plus kernels etc on the 500MiB /boot that debian also created. Much disk shuffling ensues or my laptop is non-bootable.

I can't help thinking this a bug. That's an enormous size for initramfs, surely? How big is anyone else's?

I have never thought too much about updates, but following last nights crash I have stumbled upon an important non-free software update that you might want to consider applying:

"You might not notice their effect and have precious data silently corrupted, or an important program silently misbehave. Or you could experience one of those unexplainable and infrequent software issues (such as kernel oops, application segfaults) or hardware issues"

No problem! 🙂

Clean and solid little device. Also easiest-to-upgrade computer I've ever had. Single screw to remove the top panel, slide off bottom panel, add second stick of RAM bringing it to 32GB and a 1TB m.2 SSD.

This clip shows how easy:
