Changed my mind and most likely going to install stable with on the computer at my parent's place. Feels like I'm getting old..

Any other recommendations for a stable that works good on an old PC? This thing only needs to be able to browse the web and print stuff. Has an annoying Nvidia 6000 GPU.

Vagrant Cascadian »

@trashheap

The stability promises of stable are that packages will only receive fixes for security or major breakages, and not major changes.

It is not a firehose of new upstream versions, but a trickle of small fixes.

So on the not much different from any other Debian stable system.

That said, I have decades of experience with Debian, so not sure I am the best advocate for someone less familiar!

I did create my own custom barebones image, for example...

The project had to grapple with this. It took it awhile to learn that allowing poisonous people to run rampant caused more harm than good and drove away would-be talented developers.

But there were never absolutely no rules. Perhaps the owner ("sysop") of a would ban you for insulting their cat. Perhaps they let just about anything go, including the poisonous bits.

Ok, this is serious. The client has had an HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Server in production for more or less a year, purchased new. As usual in their setup, we installed Proxmox (8.1, available at the time of installation) right from the start.
They need to standardize, and since some internal employees need to manage the VMs, Proxmox has been the ideal choice for the last 11 years.

Everything was fine, the server was in production for months without any issues. Suddenly, about a month and a half ago, they realize that the fan is always running at maximum speed. They move the workloads to another server, no difference. Now that it's idle, they try to restart it, but it doesn't change. They try booting with a System Rescue CD - the fans are still at maximum. We update Proxmox, no difference. They open it up to check, the fans are clean.

We contact HP support, they ask for the operating system - I send Proxmox, the Proxmox version, and the kernel version. I’m attaching just the latest response:
"Dear customer,
I’m sharing with you the matrices of operating systems managed by HPE and which may have different compatibility depending on the models:

HPE Servers Support & Certification Matrices
hpe.com/us/en/collaterals/coll

Proxmox 8 is not among those operating systems that are certified for firmware on HPE servers.

I asked you to inform yourself about the OS and kernel version because the kernel source codes refer to particular versions of Redhat, so it might fall under compatibility, and therefore it would make sense to install this operating system on your server model."

Proxmox isn't "certified". Debian isn't "certified".

Needless to say, the fiery response was sent. If they don't manage the issue... well, we’ll wait. Stay tuned!

Andrew »

I spotted today that my -status package was failing to build from source in . This has caused me to spend some time finishing off a major change to how it is installed, split out the Debian packaging to a different repo (using git-buildpackage).

While having upstream (me) and Debian (also me) code in different repositories will cause over head (for me), it is probably better in general.

Probably tomorrow I'll release the tarball, .deb and upload the new packaging repo to Salsa.

#GetFediHired

Since 2010, the Debian Snapshot service functions as a "wayback machine" that allows access to old packages based on dates and version numbers. However, this service has been in need for big maintenance for quite a while. Luckily, thanks to Glasklar Teknik AB and DSA in June 2024 the service has been migrated to new hardware and is now fully up and running again: enjoy snapshot.debian.org/ micronews.debian.org/2024/1722
