When building software, I believe it is important to work in public. Software can give small groups of developers immense power over lots of people. Like how governments work in public and corporations have to be more public than private company, developers should be transparent not only with their source code, but also the discussions and processes while building it. This can be hard to get used to, but not bad once used to it. Great examples of this are and IMHO

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 has hit the download mirrors! Here is one at a German university: ftp.fau.de/mint/iso/debian/

When I downloaded the ISO image yesterday, it still had beta status. That did not prevent me from installing it on my son's laptop. What follows are first impressions from a mixed father & son perspective.

I switched from MS-DOS straight to GNU/Linux and never used Windows much. My preferred distro is because it is the universal operating system created by a large, global community. I spend most of my time on the command line.

My son is now ready to give up Windows because support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, and he does not want to upgrade to Windows 11 due to all of the malware it comes with.

He installed and occasionally used Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) on an old computer in the past. As Debian 13 (“trixie”) is quite fresh and also rock-solid, I wanted to give another try. Many years ago, my parents used it happily.

LMDE comes with the desktop which looks a lot like Windows. You can download an official Debian live ISO with Cinnamon pre-installed. I tried it, but it clearly has not been configured quite as lovingly as Linux Mint's. No wonder – Linux Mint developed Cinnamon in the first place.

To my mind, this makes LMDE7 the ideal choice for beginners and pros alike. Installing it (even with full disk encryption) is a breeze – if you give it the entire disk to play with. Try to avoid multi-boot installations if at all possible. If you need Windows later, you can run it in a virtual machine. Be sure to make a complete backup of your Windows system first! We used the free Rescuezilla for this.

So far, we have not run into any issue with LMDE7. OK, there was one gotcha: When configuring automatic backups in Timeshift, do not choose the boot partition as the target. It would fill up very quickly.

I think I need to find a replacement for Scrivener. It runs *okay* in Linux, but there are some real issues.

No need to give me links to other Scrivener-like programs. I'm aware of them.

But if you write long-form in Linux, what do you use and *why*? I'm really curious about that.

Just received a new F2-425 NAS for consolidating my set of old external SATA disks.
Over the last 20 years, I've accumulated a lot of old units and DVDs for photos, videos, converted magnetic tapes, and various digital stuff. Time to use a decent RAID array for that and reduce noise.
Still not sure if I will install or use TOS.
Hey, any suggestions from other ?

Well I just installed Debian GNU/Hurd on my Thinkpad T60. It has some papercuts. The Hurd could only detect the harddrive if if set up the harddrive to "compatibility". I think that means the BIOS tries to make the harddrive appear as an PATA device...? After the install, apt tried to install software from the installer CD, not from debian.org. Ethernet worked, but boot up showed some errors with hd2...not sure why it does that.

My kids are running and are experiencing a thing where at random intervals they seem to lose all network processing for a few seconds (resulting in them getting kicked from Minecraft but also a continuous ping will show like a 10 second gap between sending packets). I'm thinking of upgrading the kernel to try to avoid this but has anyone else seen this? Its not the whole since buffered video still plays in Firefox for example.

@civodul @dthompson @daviwil arrived at this after years, this is unfortunate, but in the meantime we as community-based distributions lost a lot of users due to the barrier of accessing common hardware. That's even if for years the non-free installer and iso images were available for such cases.
My honest opinion is that current battles are about other IT hot topics: cloud, fair sustainability, monopolies, digital rights and open protocols, not firmware blobs.

A client sends me an email:
"Do you remember that internal backup server you set up a few years ago? Could you log in and check if everything’s okay? I’m not seeing any errors, but I’m not sure if it’s actually working properly".

I have a vague memory of it - I’m guessing “a few years ago” is quite a high number.
They send me the credentials and I log in:

08:46:41 up 2957 days, 18:01, 1 user, load average: 7.09, 2.34, 1.50

And, surprisingly, no errors.
Everything is working correctly, backups are present, and the disks show no issues whatsoever.
Debian.
Boot date: 14/04/2017.

Impressive.

Since 2010, the Debian Snapshot service functions as a "wayback machine" that allows access to old packages based on dates and version numbers. However, this service has been in need for big maintenance for quite a while. Luckily, thanks to Glasklar Teknik AB and DSA in June 2024 the service has been migrated to new hardware and is now fully up and running again: enjoy snapshot.debian.org/ micronews.debian.org/2024/1722
