I've been using Kermit as my telnet #BBS client. Does DOS character set (CP437) to UTF-8 translation, and also X/Y/#ZModem support (if you install lrzsz alongside it). Supports Zmodem autodownload too.

If you happened to enjoy using #BBSes back in the day, Kermit's character set translation feature makes it really easy to connect to a telnet #BBS and see ANSI CP437 graphics in today's UTF-8 world. https://www.openkermit.org/ckermit/bbs/ tells how.

One command does it: "set terminal character-set cp437 utf8". Also it's bidirectional!

After spending the past few weeks up to my eyeballs in old BBS code I'm reminded how magical the small internet was.

I've been spending free time porting (not emulating) the classic BBS adventure game MajorMUD :tm: to modern platforms using Python+SQLite.

Completely reverse engineered from the original game data, this world includes:

26,694 unique rooms
1,101 monsters
1,379 spells
383 unique weapons
532 armor items
178 shops
19 special abilities
15 classes
13 races
23 quest lines
and more!

It also uses SSH instead of telnet, because duh.
