Tired of Dropbox nagging me to upgrade to their $12/mo offering, I decided to check out #nextcloud. Installed the server on a $5/mo Linode instance and it's looking good.
I mostly want a file-sync solution rather than a "content collaboration platform", so the enterprise/team features often feel balky. Too much is turned on by default. Featureitis.
But! It works. And is open source. And is my lifeboat from Dropbox. Thanks @nextcloud!

The #Nextcloud server for the Federated Video Co-op Initiative is now fully online.
This marks a major step toward building the kind of organization we set out to create.
From the beginning, the core requirement was clear. Our infrastructure has to be open source. It cannot rely on Microsoft or Google. It cannot depend on any service with vendor lock-in. And it must be hosted entirely in Canada from top to bottom. That meant choosing a platform we can operate ourselves on Canadian hardware under Canadian law with no hidden dependencies. Nextcloud fits that mandate perfectly.
Here’s what this entails:
Nextcloud now serves as the central home for our governance work, documentation, file storage, onboarding, collaboration, project management, and video conferencing. It also includes an excellent email client.
For communication, we are currently testing Nextcloud Talk. At first glance it covers most of our needs. If it ends up falling short, Mattermost is our fallback option. Regardless of where we land for chat, Nextcloud remains the backbone for everything else.
One important clarification. The Signal group chat will not be retired. It continues to serve an important role for quick coordination and informal updates. Nextcloud is the system of record. Signal remains the fast lane for day-to-day back-and-forth.
Everyone who volunteers on an advisory basis will receive a Nextcloud account. These seats are free during the testing period. After three months, there will be a $5/month hosting cost per seat. This keeps the service sustainable and fully operated on Canadian infrastructure rather than relying on the large US tech stacks we are deliberately avoiding.
Most documents within Nextcloud will be made public once finalized. Exceptions will be limited to privacy and monetary matters. For transparency, we now have an open directory where the community can see our publicly viewable documents as they evolve:

This week I will publish a first post in my mini series for total newbies about how to self-host with #YunoHost.
The very first article will simply cover the basics of what is needed... then part 2 will be the step-by-step installation and connecting a domain + creating a subdomain... and then part 3 will cover installing an app (NextCloud) and setting up a backup system.
I'm hoping to get all this done before Christmas, in time for my one year anniversary of self-hosting with YunoHost (thank you again @ilja for setting all this in motion last year).
As I type this, I'm currently backing up my YunoHost and these days my backup files are about 13GB in size, broken down as follows (in descending order):
- #GoToSocial: 5.3 GB
- #PeerTube: 4 GB
- #NextCloud: 2.3 GB
- #Pixelfed: 1.4 GB
- #LinkStack: 91 MB

PSA: If you use #Nextcloud, make sure to update to the latest server and app versions. They published a bunch of CVEs.
Is there a reason why the #Nextcloud desktop client doesn't allow auto uploading of photos but the mobile apps ( google and iphone) do? Can the functionality be enabled for desktop version? This is currently a problem when using #PostmarketOS, at least in my use case

I want a #SelfHosted web-type Office Suite ala Google Sheets/Docs and I don't want it to be part of some gigantic resource-chewing albatross like #NextCloud
I would like to do all my Word Processing and Spreadsheeting and so forth through a web interface, which is served from my #Debian server (docker is fine) and saves the documents as normal files in a defined directory.
Does such a thing exist? I do NOT need feature-rich, I do not need it to save MSOffice docs that I can send to a printing shop with all bugs intact, I just want to stop losing shit to hard drive wipes, which I'm sorry but nuking my hard drive is a lifestyle choice at this point and I don't care what you think about it.
I have had the thought that maybe #LibreOffice has some sort of plugin or something which could store files in an Object Storage type thingy that I could self-host instead, cause I've been planning to get some sort of bucket online since forever...

Wasn't able to get #Baikal #CalDAV to work so moved everything to a now working #NextCloud instance.

Interestingly if you're connected, then remove the headers macOS Calendar continues to function. It's only when adding the account it fails.
Tried the same headers for #Baikal (with different redirects of course) but still no dice there.
Next Cloud seems overkill for what I need, but I guess I'll be migrating then.
Interesting! After updating to #macOS 15.7.2 the #Calendar app wouldn't connect to my #Baikal #CalDAV server anymore. Tried #NextCloud. #Thunderbird and other third party apps worked just fine. Was reluctant to update iOS and iPadOS as I feared those would break as well. But they kept working.
Just to test I installed NextCloud on another server that uses #Apache instead of #NginxProxyManager #NPM and lo and behold: macOS Calendar connects just fine!
But I need NPM to work...
I'm currently in progress of migrating the rest of my #Google data into #Nextcloud ahead of mass deleting it on the Google side. No particular reason other than it's long overdue and I don't want to pay for Google One.

I'm looking for some advice. I have a #Proxmox install with a ZFS pool mounted at `/tank` and my #Nextcloud data at `/tank/nextcloud`
I currently have a non-Docker version of Nextcloud running in an LXC container but it has... issues.
I'm thinking of running the Docker AIO image but I every time I try to pass through the `/tank/nextcloud` directory to a VM via #VirtioFS, it ends up causing the host kernel to panic.
Is there another way to do this?

Adding a #Nextcloud calendar to the #macOS Calendar app seems just as challenging... Ugh. Also, importing into the Nextcloud calendar doesn't seem to work...
Ugh, updating the latest update for #macOS 15 #Sequoia broke #Baikal #CalDAV. It was always finicky to get it to work but it has worked fine until now.
Maybe I should look into setting up #Nextcloud just for CalDAV... I think it supports CalDAV. But it also adds so much more I have no need for. I think 🙂.

I think my dalliance with #android may be coming to an end. I bought this titan 2 phone backing a kickstarter. It has been very unreliable. Maybe it is android 15. Maybe it is my wacky settings (i try to log out of google and do as little with them as possible). I restrict or remove permissions on a lot of stuff. It could be instability in the maker's mods to android. I don't know. But i deal with crashes. A lot
The fact is that two email programs (Thunderbird and K-9) won't run. They literally crash when opened. ProtonVPN crashes as soon as i tap "sign in". I cant remember the last time i dealt with this on my #iPhone. With this android phone it's a daily thing. I used the built-in gmail app and even it crashes sometimes.
I still don't have all my #nextcloud services integrated. I have installed TWO helper apps already (DAVx and IMAP notes) to get contacts, calendars, and notes. I STILL don't have reminder lists working. All these things were effortless on IOS. On android it's not supported out of the boxand i have to search for a workaround.

In other good news, using our community-hosted NextCloud service for push notifications is working now on both my Matrix accounts 🥳
Had to install NextPush to get it working with ElementX, but that was pretty quick and easy. I just installed it, logged in to NC and approved the app, and restarted ElementX. Voila! No more error messages.
@SomeGadgetGuy Pretty sure it's the (encrypted) storage that failed. Most everything I care about was backed up to my #nextcloud.

Support of iterate GmbH responded immediately and told me I could use a version 5 license to run the available version for Mavericks, 2.7.2. So let's try that!

Recordatorio periódico de nunca usar una #raspberrypi para finalidades medianamente serias porque las SD las carga el diablo. Acabo de perder mi #Nextcloud por un pete catastrófico de la tarjeta. Afortunadamente los datos están en un SSD aparte así que simplemente tendré que llevarle ese disco a un ordenador en condiciones y volver a montar un Nextcloud. Entre la subida de precios de las raspi, la bajada de los N100 con sus consumos ridículos y la poca fiabilidad de la SD cada vez tiene menos sentido usar las Raspberry para #selfhosting
