How Russia keeps raising an army to replace its dead

An online bazaar of freelance headhunters finds new recruits to fight Ukraine, emboldening Vladimir Putin at the negotiating table and scaring European leaders about what his growing army might do next.

I read the serious discussions about ‘who eavesdropped on Ushakov and Dmitriev’ and can’t help but chuckle to myself.

All these deliberations about whether it was the NSA or GCHQ are based on the assumption that Ushakov had to use a secure means of communication. Had to… because why exactly?

Because politicians are renowned for their unwavering commitment to adhering to rules, including #OPSEC? But they are not.

Let us recall the US and European leaders who, in #Ukraine Kyiv in 2013, happily chatted on the phone and were recorded (‘Nuland–Pyatt call’).

Shortly afterwards, Sergei Glazyev from the #Russia presidential administration did the same and was recorded… by the new SBU (‘Glazyev tapes’, much less well-known but much more devastating).

In summary, if one can generalise the concept of high-level politics in #infosec matters, it is that those in power do not apply the rules to themselves and do not learn from their mistakes precisely because they are in power.

In short, Hanlon’s razor applies.

It is exactly what is happening now, as described in a recent explosive Wall Street Journal exposé that documents exactly how much Russia is dangling the prospect of riches to friends of Donald Trump Jr. and other connected Americans in exchange for a dishonorable peace that sells out Ukraine, our European allies and the vast majority of Americans who oppose Vladimir Putin’s genocidal war."

"Dmitriev was pushing a plan for U.S. companies to tap the roughly $300 billion of Russian central bank assets, frozen in Europe, for U.S.-Russian investment projects and a U.S.-led reconstruction of Ukraine. U.S. and Russian companies could join to exploit the vast mineral wealth in the Arctic. There were no limits to what two longtime adversaries could achieve, Dmitriev had argued for months: Their rival space industries, which raced one another during the Cold War, could even pursue a joint mission to Mars with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

For the Kremlin, the Miami talks were the culmination of a strategy, hatched before Trump’s inauguration, to bypass the traditional U.S. national security apparatus and convince the administration to view Russia not as a military threat but as a land of bountiful opportunity, according to Western security officials. By dangling multibillion-dollar rare-earth and energy deals, Moscow could reshape the economic map of Europe—while driving a wedge between America and its traditional allies.
Dmitriev, a Goldman Sachs alumnus, had found receptive partners in Witkoff—Trump’s longtime golfing partner—and Kushner, whose investment fund, Affinity Partners, drew billion-dollar investments from the Arab monarchies whose conflict with Israel he had helped mediate.
(...)
“Russia has so many vast resources, vast expanses of land,” Witkoff told (...) describing at length his hopes that Russia, Ukraine and America would all become business partners. “If we do all that, and everybody’s prospering and they’re all a part of it, and there’s upside for everybody, that’s going to naturally be a bulwark against future conflicts there. Because everybody’s thriving.”

When a version of the 28-point plan leaked earlier this month, it drew immediate protests. Leaders in Europe and Ukraine complained it reflected mostly Russian talking points and bulldozed through nearly all of Kyiv’s red lines."

Joint Statement by the Leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight
We - the leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight - spoke with President Zelenskyy today. We have from the outset of Russia's war of aggression stood by Ukraine's side and we will continue to do so. Our resolve comes from the fact that we know that this is not only about Ukrainian security, it is also about the wider security of Europe.
Ukraine has continuously shown that it is serious about peace. We commend President Zelenskyy for his efforts to steer Ukraine through these very challenging times. Ukraine remains ready to negotiate and, as stated by President Zelenskyy, is working on the document prepared by the US. Russia has so far not committed to a ceasefire or any steps leading to peace. Instead, Russia continues its brutal attacks against Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
Solutions that respect Ukraine's sovereignty and that will bring Ukraine and Europe greater security and stability have our full support.
We will continue to arm Ukraine and strengthen Europe's defence to deter further Russian aggression. As long as Russia continues its war against Ukraine, we will also support strengthening sanctions and wider economic measures.
Finally, to the Ukrainian people: Your resolve, determination and courage has been truly admirable from the outset of the war. We want you to know that you are not alone and can count on our support.

The "-US Data Privacy Framework" is the agreement that lets the US tech giants operate in Europe despite insufficient privacy regulations in the US, down to secret service level crap like "National Security Letters". It's widely criticised for having not much more substance than a mere "trust me, bro."

Still, the European General Court just decided in September that the reforms by the US are sufficient to make it a dependable framework. One cornerstone of these "reforms" is an Executive Order - those things that trump bases his rule on (after congress gave up on its job) and that he can change nilly-willy.

With trump basically adopting putin's demand that surrenders (and thereby encourages that genocidal maniac at our footsteps to continue), maybe it's time to discuss if this trust is still warranted.

The framework supports 7.1 trillion USD in trade (a lot of that going towards the US), so it could be quite a lever to reign in on the autocrats.

I wrote an about this. If you want to join in, europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/hom has the list.

Other victims included Soviet prisoners of war, communists and Romani people. It was the largest single massacre in the Holocaust up to that date, and the 3rd largest, overall, after the 1941 Odessa massacre (>50,000 victims) and Aktion Erntefest of November 1943 in occupied Poland (> 42,000 victims). "A Ukrainian intelligence officer says the Americans are being “unbelievably aggressive” in pushing Ukraine to forfeit more land. The Russian interest is clear enough, he says. “They want to maximise the package they will get in return—from sanctions relief, to the return of seized assets, to the re-opening of energy markets.” What, he says, is far less clear is why the Trump administration was pushing so forcefully to promote Russia’s interests.

Despite the obvious headwinds, Mr Trump appears committed to his quick-fix peace. The Economist understands a three-way meeting between Mr Trump, Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky could come as early as the end of next week. Before that, on Monday, the Ukrainian leader is scheduled to arrive in Washington for his first visit since his humiliation in February. European leaders will join him in a show of support. But some of the ingredients appear ominously similar to his previous visit. Channelling the logic of Mr Putin, Mr Trump is already preparing to blame Ukraine if his plans blow up, Ukrainians fear. “Make a deal,” he advised Mr Zelensky, via Fox News. “Russia is a very big power. [You] are not.”"

"The Times, the Post, CNN, Associated Press, all the major news outlets are reporting the fact that a team of adults in the room are flying to the United States to protect Zelenskyy from Trump as if it’s a normal news story, not the story that it is -- disgusting evidence of how far we have fallen as a nation, politically, morally, and in every other measurable way."

Greg Dworkin offers an array of Sunday headlines illustrating that the media are not being duped by the empty pageantry of Trump's meeting with Putin and are not ignoring Trump's being played by Putin.

"Meanwhile, National Guard troops roam the streets of Washington, D.C., linger around Union Station and set up checkpoints in safe neighborhoods, underscoring the lie that this federal takeover is intended to rid our nation’s capital of crime."

And, of course, all these shows are designed to distract from Epstein, the fact that Trump is repeatedly mentioned in the Epstein files, and that he refuses to release them.
