Not unrelated to the Putin-Trump show of dominance (P) and submission (T): as kos reminds us,

"There is a genre of MAGA conservative so right wing, so brain dead, that they go through the immense hassle of moving themselves and their family to Russia—where gay and transgender people supposedly don’t exist, and
well, that appears to be the bulk of the motivation for fleeing."

"A Ukrainian intelligence officer says the Americans are being “unbelievably aggressive” in pushing Ukraine to forfeit more land. The Russian interest is clear enough, he says. “They want to maximise the package they will get in return—from sanctions relief, to the return of seized assets, to the re-opening of energy markets.” What, he says, is far less clear is why the Trump administration was pushing so forcefully to promote Russia’s interests.

Despite the obvious headwinds, Mr Trump appears committed to his quick-fix peace. The Economist understands a three-way meeting between Mr Trump, Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky could come as early as the end of next week. Before that, on Monday, the Ukrainian leader is scheduled to arrive in Washington for his first visit since his humiliation in February. European leaders will join him in a show of support. But some of the ingredients appear ominously similar to his previous visit. Channelling the logic of Mr Putin, Mr Trump is already preparing to blame Ukraine if his plans blow up, Ukrainians fear. “Make a deal,” he advised Mr Zelensky, via Fox News. “Russia is a very big power. [You] are not.”"

I think this is the largest number of newspaper hats I’ve seen in recent historic footage. No direct identification or credit in the video, but is this the coal miners’ strike, Donetsk, Ukraine, sometime between 1989–1991?

And do you know how to make the hats? There seems to be several varieties: one like a cap, one a variation of the traditional newspaper hat origamiheaven.com/historyofthe, and some seem to be a compound of two different hats?

Edit: I think one hat is a variation of the printer's cap origamiheaven.com/historyofthe

At least in #Poland all the time I hear otherwise reasonable people who say “let’s make a deal with #Russia with US as a guarantor”.

This is easily dismissed as a trivial naivety, but why doesn’t it work? Because Russia never honors any agreements with parties it considers weaker. Russian elites largely follow code of ethics originating from organised crime, similar to Italian OmertĂ .[^1] In this system you’re either a “man”, whose word can be relied upon, or a “loser” (Russian: Đ»ĐŸŃ…), who can be exploited in any way, including deception. And, as a matter of fact, not exploiting a “loser” and holding a word given to him is a honor offense for the “man” himself. Putin often directly or indirectly refers to the criminal “code of ethics” in his public speeches, and occasionally uses terms from the criminal jargon (Russian: Ń„Đ”ĐœŃ). Russian popular culture in response started to popularize and idealize it, even in TV series.[^2]

Lesson about “making deals with Russia” had been hard learned by many countries. In 1945 in Yalta[^3] leaders of USA and UK made a deal with Stalin where in Soviet-liberated #Poland there would be democratic elections under international supervision. What Soviet did was first mass-arrests[^4], then entirely falsified referendum[^5] and then falsified elections[^6], which sealed Poland’s fate as a Soviet colony for the next 42 years.

From recent history, #Ukraine had written security assurances from Russia in Budapest Memorandum[^7], guaranteed by US and UK, and also mutual friendship treaty with Russia signed in 1997.[^8] In 2014 Russia walked upon both of them as if they never existed. Even more recently, the ceasefires agreed in 2015-2019 Minsk Agreements were violated by Russia on the next day they were signed - Russians simply never stopped their offensives. As an added bonus, all that time Russia allso pretended it’s not Russian armed forces conducting these attacks.[^9]

That’s exclusively because in Russian thinking you are allowed to sign any agreement and promise anything to the other party but you’re not expected to deliver, as long as you consider them “losers”. This is what Russia did - in Yalta, Budapest and Minsk they made promises because US and UK wanted them and it helped push Russian political goals. But they never intended to honour them for even a minute.

That’s why “making deals with Russia” alone won’t work as long as their enforcement relies exclusively on international law, which - no need to explain - Russia also consider for “losers”.

You can of course make a successful deal with Russia if it’s supported by hard reciprocal measures, such as anti-tank trenches, mine fields or drones and rockets targeted at Russian military installations. But anything signed exclusively on paper won’t hold.

Every hour you read something more warmongering than the previous. Everyday they say openly that they take our money to give em to a bunch of capitalists and we, the working class, just standing there like hypnotized waiting for the military call to be meat for their profits.

is seeing a dramatic boost in defense budgets, driven by both long-standing pressure from Washington and the continent’s own reaction to ’s full-scale invasion of . That promises a glut of military contracts for weapons-makers in Europe as well as in the U.S., South Korea and elsewhere.
...The enormous scale of new defense spending — the European Commission estimates that the bloc’s members will need to spend €500 billion on defense over the next decade — still means there will be a lot of money available for European defense firms.
That said, the early winner of Europe’s defense buildup is likely to be the U.S.

Organizations, activists, political and material collectives who run for environmental issues, etc. should take action to fight . They openly say (everywhere, not just in ) that they must spend the money of (you remember that big companies have less taxes than us?) for armaments and to leave the (capitalist) green transition aside. Means they don't care at all about the destruction war industry and their inevitable wars produce. Tusk explains better.

«Making references to Russia's full-scale invasion of and Belarus's campaign of instrumentalised migration, which his country has experienced firsthand, Tusk implored EU states to address security "seriously" and be "flexible" and "creative" to design novel ways to finance the necessary boost in military expenditure.»
«"I'll be honest: we shouldn't really care too much about what method we adopt to finance pan- defence projects," he told lawmakers in .»
«In the prime minister's view, "some" of the environmental regulations that the has introduced in the past five years are responsible for the "prohibitively" high prices. - Energy bills began rising in 2022 when the market hit record-high levels in reaction to 's manipulation of gas supplies.»

#Russia completely removed Ukrainian language from the school curriculum in schools on the occupied #Ukraine territories including #Crimea

Source: https://t.me/moscowtimes_ru/34555 (in Russian)

Previously Ukrainian language was formally present in the curriculum as a fig leaf, demonstrating that Russia doesn’t discriminate on the national minorities, even if it was almost never actually taught due to informal pressure on teachers, parents and pupils.

Interesting #Ukraine SBU communication from today mentioning an assassination attempt that was planned by #Russia FSB in #Poland

“Speaking of the assassination attempts on the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, another operation should be mentioned. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Polish Internal Security Agency – we carried out an important criminal investigation together with them. A Polish military pensioner who was recruited decades ago, he firmly believed in the Soviet idea and nurtured his intentions over the years. So, the enemy reactivated this “old guard”,” said the head of the SBU. The agent’s task was to physically eliminate President Zelensky at the Rzeszów airport.

‘Several options were considered. One of them was an FPV drone, another was a sniper complex. But we detained the agent. Our Polish colleagues worked professionally, it was a joint effort,’ added Vasyl Malyuk.

No details were reported so far by Polish media, but knowing them a bit we should probably soon know the name of the perpetrator 😉

The Dogs of Mariupol: Russia’s Invasion and the Forging of Ukraine’s Iron Generation by Tom Mutch, 2025

It painstakingly documents the immense human catastrophe wrought on Ukrainian society and the divisions between those who fought and those who fled.

@bookstodon
@ukraine

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Kateryna hung up her dresses, Oksana and Stanislav put down their lawyers' briefs and Oksen slammed shut his philosophy textbooks. Alongside thousands of their fellow citizens, they strapped on armour, picked up weapons and chose to risk their lives for the freedom and independence of their homeland. Many would never return. Journalist Tom Mutch woke up in Kyiv on 24 February to a world changed for ever. Making a fateful choice to stay and cover the invasion, he witnessed the forging of an 'iron generation' of young Ukrainians. With first-hand reporting from all the major battlegrounds and front lines, The Dogs of Mariupol recounts the war's notorious encounters, such as the Battle of Kyiv and the Siege of Mariupol, but also uncovers untold stories, like the 1st Tank Brigade's desperate defence of Chernihiv and the civilian guerrilla army fighting overwhelming odds in Sumy. This is not a triumphalist account of Ukraine's fight, however. It painstakingly documents the immense human catastrophe wrought on Ukrainian society and the divisions between those who fought and those who fled. It also delves deeper into events to answer important historical questions: could the Russian plan to capture Kyiv have succeeded? Did Ukraine make a fatal error by committing for so long to the defence of Bakhmut? And with more western support, could Ukraine have won this terrible war outright?

"Crimean Bridge WAS A DECOY! Russians BRACE FOR THE REAL STRIKE! | RFU News" [6:02 min]
by RFU News — Reporting from Ukraine

youtube.com/watch?v=12PpA75MJf

Quote by RFUN:
"Jun 8, 2025
Today, there are a lot of interesting updates from the Sea of Japan.
Here, after Ukraine’s audacious underwater drone strike on the Kerch Bridge, Russian analysts have begun sounding the alarm over the possibility of an even more devastating follow-up. To them, the Kerch operation wasn’t just a spectacular success—it looked like a rehearsal for something far more dangerous, aimed at Russia’s most sensitive naval bases in the far east.
In light of the massively successful operation Spiderweb, showing Ukraine’s ability to strike deep in the heart of Russian territory by both conventional and unconventional means, the Ukrainian Security Service carried out another stunning strike.
In their own, so-called, special operation, Ukrainians hit the underwater support structure of the Kerch bridge. The estimated 1,100 kilogram explosion detonated around 10 meters deep, making the damage more difficult to assess and repair. Notably, Ukraine announced the strike by releasing footage taken from a Russian security camera, showing how deeply infiltrated Ukrainian intelligence services are in Russian networks.
To conduct the strike, Ukrainians used a new variant of underwater naval drone, the Toloka 1,000 or the Toloka 400. These new underwater drones, upgrades of the Toloka 150, can deliver between half a ton and 5 tons of explosives at a range of 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers, respectively. The drones can operate at a depth of up to 40 meters. Their compact design and quiet propulsion systems make them ideal for covert sabotage missions against high-value Russian naval and logistics infrastructure.
However, Russian analysts note that Ukraine could have used multiple Toloka drones in sequence to breach defenses and collapse the bridge. They suggest that this was therefore not the main strike, but rather a field test of upgraded underwater drone capabilities. Operation Spiderweb demonstrated that Ukraine can strike deep into Russia using unconventional platforms, hitting unexpected targets beyond traditional frontlines. Now, with new and upgraded underwater drones in play, Russian analysts started raising the alarm that the Pacific naval assets are under imminent threat.
Russian analysis are worried that to hit Russia’s far east, Ukrainians could realistically use container ships laden with concealed naval drones. The Ukrainians operate a large fleet of merchant vessels, including container ships. These are more difficult to regulate and inspect, making it easier to smuggle the underwater drones in them. Furthermore, careful coordination of shipping towards international ports of Ukrainian allies, such as Australia, the United States, Japan, and South Korea, could reduce the risk of such an operation being intercepted, especially with the cooperation of allied intelligence services.
Once the container ships enter the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, or even dock in Russian ports, they would already be within range of releasing underwater drones, with the Toloka 1,000 having a range of 2,000 kilometers at the least. Ukraine could launch these drones from the deck, or through an underwater configuration comparable to a torpedo launch. The targets would be the Russian naval bases in Vladivostok and on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
../\.. [± 300 char taken out due to the length]
Such strikes would not have a direct military impact for Ukraine, but it would bring the war to the Russian home front in a way never seen before. Additionally, it would undermine Russia's ability to defend itself in a broader sense, eroding the Russian nuclear triad even further, after already having lost over a third of its strategic bomber fleet. Such an operation would exponentially magnify the pressure on Russia to seek a realistic negotiated peace settlement, as the Ukrainian Istanbul delegation already noted how, after the launch of Operation Spiderweb, their Russian counterparts were much less hostile than before.
Overall, Ukraine’s strike on the Kerch Bridge fits into a broader, coordinated campaign, seemingly without range limitations. It marks the start of a new phase in long-range underwater warfare. With upgraded Toloka drones now capable of reaching over 2,000 kilometers, Russian analysts openly worry this was only a trial run, and that Ukraine’s real targets lie in the Pacific, where Russian nuclear..."
