https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/5G?wprov=sfla1
No has dicho nada que no guste o no tengas razón.
@DekaBlack y no te equivocas fijo
hackers have also configured the function — which normally runs for just two hours a day — into a continuous, forced defrosting cycle with the temperature set to a toasty 50 degrees CelsiusPues parece que sí, que tienen equipamiento anti-hielo que la pone a esa temperatura.
@victor @angel @Argyle13
@337guanacos @Argyle13 Por ejemplo 🤢
I refuse to understand how a European company continues to use the US Docusign for legal documents.
@jpmens I refuse to understand why DocuSign is supposed to be more secure than an email stating "trust me, bro," and why the entire corporate world seems to unanimously agree that it's perfectly secure and legal.
Hi folks, if you are maintaining a widely used #OpenSource infrastructure project (think networking, encryption, testing/QA automation, desktop libraries, payment libraries ...) now is a good time to ask for a security audit or other support through the Sovereign Tech Resilience program.
The basic idea is: you apply (quick process), and we pair you with a partner firm from our network. We help with the scoping and pay the bill for the partner.
This is _not_ money for maintainers -- we have other programs for that -- but it does translate in free access to services for you.
Please take a look at the full services provided and consider if some of them could make sense for you. Happy to answer questions.
Ojalá me equivoque.
@hirunatan
No sé.
@modulux
No me parece tan raro.
Half of the AI patches don't work with Keith Hoodlet and @joshbressers
This paper proves exactly what I have been saying in numerous talks: fixing vulnerabilities properly still requires a clever human involved.
https://opensourcesecurity.io/2026/2026-10-keith-ai-patches/
As a hypothetical case, lets assume LLMs get good at coding and someone builds millions of lines of code that exactly duplicate Photoshop or MS Office and its all open source. People start using these LLM clones in masses and stop paying those companies. Let’s see how they react then, because they always claim that’s just how humans learn and that it isn’t copyright infringement. There shouldn’t be any github take downs or copyright infringement lawsuits then, right?
@nixCraft hmm but it isn't about what makes logical sense, it's about power.
poor people don't have the power to stop AI corpos from stealing their images => so it's allowed
rich corpos do have the power to stop the plebs from having an LLM steal their software => so it won't be allowed
@nixCraft Isn't that what the Artcraft people are essentially trying to do?
As with most stochastic complete topics, my strategic popcorn reserves are well stocked.
@nixCraft Microsoft stops subsidising OpenAI, charges the project what it actually costs, end of the project.
Or just terminates their accounts for breach of the T&Cs. Legality is irrelevant, as demonstrated by the silly YouTube copyright strikes system.
@nixCraft
We can also imagine that next year there is net power from Fusion, Or Putin ends his war, or all Oracle SW is free & open source, or World hunger & homelessness is abolished, or the GOP impeaches Trump & his coterie.
These are all more likely than LLMs being good at anything rather than copying.
@nixCraft Yes that is happening already:
https://getartcraft.com/apps
@nixCraft as I've said before, some people will get very rich out of this. Those people being lawyers.
@nixCraft As an open source dev of 10 years, I've thought about this a lot.
I think copyright was the wrong solution from the start.
What should be protected isn't the final code of a project, it's the work that went into it - the human time (which I am told has inherent moral value).
It's always harder to be the first to do something because you explore dead ends. SW dev isn't about writing code but making decisions and finding out what works and what doesn't. 1/n
@nixCraft I mean that's the reality of a world where LLMs deliver on the promise of "solving" programming. Software no longer has any value. All companies whose main capital is IP are dead in the water.
@nixCraft The REA "Community" is already working on reverse engineering photoshop with AI... if you listen to their hype, it's the cusp of a software revolutionw here you just describe what you ewantt o do and the magic box will spit out a fuly custom version of whatever program you want.
I think it's bullshit, but it is a clear indication of what they desire & are working towards.
Here's another nightmare possibility.
Bradley passed away in 1965. As a loud & proud John Birch Society alumni, he dedicated millions in zombie trust funds to the eradication of the Voting Rights Act.
Brick by brick, they bought enough corrupt Supreme Court Justices & ended equal access to the ballot.
Their immortal money plugging on & on, and chipping away at the Constitution & Democracy.
What happens if a Project 2025 oligarch wills his money to an AI to continue the mission?
Good question. As I know some people who are very fond of the idea that in the nearer future one has only to ask a language model to build "on the fly" the software currently needed: office tools, video chat pps, (banking apps?), etc. Of cause this has to take place locally, not in a cloudy environment.
Total freedom, isn’t it?
@nixCraft who/what will ML models learn from if human coders stop coding?
It can only mimic training data, and has no concept of opinionated design or the kinds of insight that humans have into what will be useful, and teaches new generations of developers to avoid original thought.
New devs don't need 50% incoherent and incorrect eco chambers, they need education and actual comprehension of the problems they're trying to solve.
@nixCraft Yeah everyone that's pro-slop seems convinced that a couple of US judges rulings saying genAI output is public domain is the final word on it. And I'm pretty convinced that (1) even in the US, judges are going to start to rule in a more nuanced matter than those rulings expect (indeed, I believe one such ruling dropped this week), and (2) the rest of the world will blindly follow along and (3) the law will never change and even if the "genAI is PD" precedent is upheld one day, those who rely upon copyright protection won't lobby to change those laws.
It gets worse because we could end up with copyright laws even more draconian than what we have today. It is perfectly legal today, as the ReactOS and Wine people prove, to copy third party operating systems with a clean room implementation. But what if copyright laws change so that the overall product, not the implementation of the product, is what qualifies for protection? That would be an legislatively easy "solution" that'd keep Microsoft, Oracle, etc, happy, but would have far reaching affects.
@nixCraft If it's a true clean room implementation I'd say good luck with the lawsuits! And good luck getting it off the the thousands of systems already using it 😂 . The damage is done. The gate has lifted
@nixCraft This is happening today, and you're right this will accelerate. Further let's say a cease and dissist is issued for infringement of x,y, and z. In a few hours you and your AI have refactored the infringement away, Let's go 💪
@nixCraft Interesting. This is actually happening and what's legal right now is that the AI must not see the original source code and it can try to replicate the functionality of the original products. Underlying code will be completely different, and that's why it's legal (for now).
@nixCraft Also, let's train LLMs on Skydance movies. Then let them reproduce them. Larry Ellison must be kekking himself.
@nixCraft The issue is, software isn’t a one-off thing like these people assume. Once you make a product, you gotta handle bug reports, add features and maintain it. Can that be done by individuals? I doubt. And then there is the legal angle. None of these companies are gonna sit back and watch as their key products are being reverse engineered.
This can sound impressive as a demo but its a whole different game to maintain it.
COPIO:
RE: https://mstdn.social/@ecosdelfuturo/116976517983989850
https://archive.org/details/tante-a-luddist-criticism-of-open-source
@Charky84 Lo otro:
A domain name of mine failed in #DNSViz. The error message is as follows:
org zone: The server(s) were not responsive to queries over UDP. See RFC 1035, Sec. 4.2. (2001:500:c::1)
I checked other *.org. domain names, and they all seem to error on the same cause.
Following this rabbit hole shows, that the IPv6 in the error message is one of the authoritative nameservers of org., namely b0.org.afilias-nst.org..
Asking this specific nameserver responds with UDP to requests on IPv4 and on IPv6. Is it, that DNSViz's hosts are blocked and cannot reach that server? Other IPv6 addresses of the other nameservers of org. also appear to respond on UDP.
Thankful for insights!
Renoir in Paris: Impressionism and the 'city of love' | National Gallery
Follow the first 20 years of Renoir's career from the 1860s to the 1880s; from his years as a young bohemian artist in Montmartre working alongside friends Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, to the creation of his famous Impressionist paintings.
I got a call from someone I don't know.
"Hi. We have a FreeBSD server. It's been working perfectly for years, but it hasn't been updated since then. We asked AI to update it, but now it won't boot anymore. It didn't even make a backup before starting. The AI keeps trying things, everything is down, and we've already spent over €500 in tokens. Can you help us?"
"Sure. €500, plus the time it'll take me to try to fix it. Assuming it can still be fixed and nothing important has been deleted."
"That much?"
Some silence.
"Well, I hope AI takes your job away!" And he hung up.
Believing that autopilot automatically makes you an invulnerable professional pilot will ruin far more people than job losses will.
I don't know if AI will take my job away, but it's already cost them €500 and, probably, their server.
@stefano
Shocking ignorance, is it not? Some people keep amazing me.
I bet they have fired someone too soon on the assumptions of promised intelligence.
@stefano 🤯 it's amazing (by which I mean worrying) how many people seem to think they can absolve themselves of any responsibility by using AI.
I don't understand why anyone would just let AI loose on a production system like that, and even blame AI for not taking backups. Although why was it not being backed up anyway?
I wonder how much more money they will waste in tokens rather than pay a professional to fix the mess.
@stefano they could at least have block-level imaged it before they sent an AI onto it. I forget that people who have servers don't know how to use them; sometimes.
@stefano paying 500€ to a corporation ✅
paying 500€ plus hours to a person who actually get your calls 😡😡😡
@stefano how the heck to you even spend that much?! For context I do use these tools fairly regularly and my spend is like $20/month 😂 And all they were trying to do was some basic server admin?!
@ianthetechie if I understood correct, they used then api and let an agent run for…days?
@stefano I almost think this story is unbelievable, except I know you well enough to be certain the tale, sadly, is true.
Sorry for their loss.
As the Monty Python troupe would say/yell: "run away!"
@stefano I recently had someone ask me to set up WordPress for them. I agreed and they asked if I would be using AI to do the work. I assured them no, it is a simple (for me) task which takes just a few minutes.
They then clarified they were asking me to use AI to do the install. They thought using AI would somehow make the vanilla WordPress setup better. They were fine with it taking longer, even, if I somehow involved AI in the process they had already offloaded to me.
@stefano Unbelievable how many crazy IT stories you’ve got. At this point you could probably write a couple of volumes. I imagine they’d sell good too
@stefano I thought €500 was remarkably low place to start but it sounds like it was an effective deterrent.
@stefano weird how companies will throw good money after bad with American software companies but doing it internally costs and right costs too much.
@stefano and that's why you need an AI voice receptionist to handle these calls 🙊
Ai Receptionist: Ciao, I'm your friendly AI voice receptionist. How can I help you?
Customer: Eh, ciao... Our LLM botched our FreeBSD server upgrade, didn't take backups, and we already spent a lot of tokens and it's still trying... Can you help?
AI Receptionist: You were absolutely right to reach out. I assure you I can help. You want me to support your AI Agent in further botching your upgrade and spend more tokens on the task. It's good there's no backup in the way, so we both won't be running out of disk space.
Hang on while I make contact with your bankaccount for more tokens, and access to your network to team up with your AI. Thanks for calling.
@stefano apps and social networks have spawned a generation of people who think they shouldn’t have to pay for anything. Only they should make money not you.
@stefano I bet the LMM agent upgraded and rebooted FreeBSD without updating the boot code, something which is documented in both the FreeBSD upgrading instructions and in the FreeBSD handbook.
@subnetspider that's what I'm suspecting, too. They said "it doesn't boot anymore". Or the agent used dd to write the boot code but mistakenly overwrote something more than the boot code.

@makdaam@chaos.social
@stefano Good thing they didn't hire you to get blamed for the whole thing.
We've had a similar thing (alas without AI, just lack of maintenance because they didn't pay their only admin) to a medium sized hosting company in Poland in 2016 (Adweb/2be.pl).
An IT company offered to help in incident response mode, after everything got fixed the hosting company said they won't pay the high fees for the response, IT company restored old snapshots, then got blamed for all kinds of made up issues.
@stefano There`s some of a wisdom called "Скупой платит дважды". Well, in their case they will most likely pay three times :)
@stefano Meh, just meh, this reminds me of all the thanks I didn't get when I saved the City of London prop trading desk I was contracting for by doing a live ext4 Linux filesystem recovery on an HP MSA based SAN.
@stefano Almost my entire income is unfucking bad AI nonsense, much of it starts like this story.
And it almost always comes with a phase in the negotiations where they beg me to reduce my rates because they have already spent so much money on AI.
But that isn't my fault, nor my problem.
Never been told off like this though.
@stefano Apparently it's not really important to them.
And it sounds like a customer noone wants to have.
@stefano Sigh, I hope someone there gets fired for their decision. You are paying the expert for their knowledge and experience.
I work full time in IT and it is rare that I get asked to do after hours work on the side. Rates depends on what they ask, but it starts at $50 an hour Canadian and a minimum of four hours.
@stefano And you didn't charge too much for the task—it was more suited for a miracle-working saint on steroids.
@stefano A friend of mine said "500 plus time seems low" and I suggested that perhaps the goal is that when they come crawling back €2k in the hole you then say "Right, so two thousand plus time..."
@stefano I think folks really have a lack of value for our profession because it's "computer skills".
It's the same attitude as "oh it's just plumbing" and before you know it you're knee deep in dirty water.
No matter how desperate we are for money, we must value our time. And like just get a plumber in.
We don't have to be good at everything. It's a chance to get to know folks and you never know the plumber might know a business that need your professional help.
@onepict True. Years ago, "it's an easy task! The 12 years old son of my friend could do it".
My reply was: "Let him do that, but don't call me when everything will be gone".
At times, it happened. Sometimes, they just went out of business.
@stefano Years ago we had a packet storm in our office which was a nightmare of hubs hanging off hubs, handing off hubs.
I literally had to get everyone off the network and find the offending printer someone plugged in. Then get each department to log back in on a staggered scale.
Couple of weeks later and an engineer went oh I run a network at home. "Yeah how big?" I ask him, "5".
With restraint I told him that this site alone had 150 pcs and we had other sites in the city.
He shut up.
@stefano All that because the office didn't want to invest in a rewire and more switches.
@onepict Many of the problems customers have are related to lack of (small) investment in hardware or proper planning. The most difficult part is making them understand that they'll pay it, sooner or later, with interest and a lot of wasted time.
Luckily, many understand it and plan accordingly.
@onepict @stefano I don't know if corporate law is same in mainland Europe as UK, but there's a lot of "serial entrepreneurs" around who will simply let their business burn and walk away from all the creditors (using limited liability as a way of avoiding personal consequences) rather than do things properly or hire the right people.
And its not just in tech but across the board, to the point I do full audits on any suppliers I deal with, checking Companies House and all sorts (including any personal info I can find out about the directors)
AI is going to unearth way more of these, albeit with quite a bit of collateral damage along the line..
@vfrmedia @onepict One of the things I could never understand is running a business you really don't understand or don't care about.
I do the job I love, and I have a tiny company because I want to be the boss of myself and suggest my customers the solutions I believe in.
Running an IT company only for making money and for a short period of time sounds, to me, quite bad.
@stefano @onepict in Britain a lot of them don't start off bad or dishonest, but are so focused on constant growth they take on more work than they can support.
I've seen it with online services (we've been through 4 different care planning systems at work in 20 years because the small companies making them burned out), same with SMEs selling VOIP hardware (I seem to need a new one each time), also see this with automotive stuff (the place I got my last car from enshittified itself chasing after larger sales volumes and it was already creaking at the seams when I bought the car), and places like Amazon end up winning more business as for all their faults they do deliver stuff on time on more occasions..
I agree with the group here,@stefano. They did you a massive favor. You do not want this client. That nastiness at the end of the call is just their own unforeseen (by them ) consequences coming home to roost.
@bsdtv I agree. I mean: I'm a consultant, so I'm open to consulting. But if you're paying a lot of money to [BIGTECH] that messed up, find me because someone (or the Internet) told you I can fix it and you want to pay me just some spare change, you'd better continue with your useless and disruptive token-burning agent.
@stefano exactly. And we all know what doing * the exact same thing over and over * and expecting a different result is a sign of! Be well my friend!
@stefano I think this story then tells how good is FreeBSD documentation.
@stefano
So they're happy to burn €500 and get the wrong answer, but they bulk at paying that much to get (an almost certainly) correct answer and fix?
"Whatdaya mean it'll cost €3000 to fix my car? The €1600 sledgehammer the AI told me to use was much cheaper and it took the engine out in seconds, now you want to replace it and charge me more?! Why are you ripping me off? I just want my car to work!"
I just can't with people.
Same scenario when people hire unskilled folks to do a kitchen remodel, based on their low quote. After it is finished and they are unhappy with products and teh sink leaks they call in a skilled tradesperson and cry when they are quoited another 50-60% to FIX the crappy work and installations!
"You can pay me now or you can pay me double later. "
@stefano you’re charging the same amount to rescue my truck that I spent getting it stuck? Outrageous!
@stefano The call tomorrow: "Hi, I've already spent €1500 on tokens and it's still down and I need your help. Are you still available for €500?" "No, I'm sorry, now it'll cost €1500."
@stefano I say this all the time “you don’t know what you don’t know”. No LLM will proactively warn you about issues you don’t know about and no LLM will fill in the gaps of your knowledge for you.
It does what you ask it to do, so its context is your knowledge, not the other way around.
@stefano
I don't get this attitude for anything broken. Once I realize something will be a complicated fix, I immediately think that paying a professional is the cheapest solution. My computer, the plumbing, the roof, my taxes. If I know I could dig myself a deeper hole on my own, I give it to someone who won't.
Some people were never taught "penny wise, pound foolish" when growing up.
@stefano the only way this could have been made better is if you were coincidentally eating a bowl of popcorn
@stefano F-yeah. Nice response. The amount of resentment toward people with IT skill is palpable. “You want to charge me for help with a free web page builder?”. “You’re charging me more than the device cost!”.
Shits going to burn down.
@stefano I don't know, feels like the +500 is punishment for reaching to AI instead of a person, and you chose that instead as a teaching moment of "don't trust AIs ever again".
I know lots of non computering people who use AI for one reason or another, and I don't scold them, but I take every opportunity to try to teach them. Last Sunday I explained some issues about AI data centers, and the people honestly didn't know. The one that asked most questions said themselves were "a total ignorant".
@mdione no punishment at all. If you call me and say "I need to upgrade my server", it's one thing. If you call me and say "my server isn't working, not booting anymore, I do not have any backups, I don't know what happens", I need to investigate first.
I'm not punishing anyone, but you can't expect to call me and fix it in 10 minutes, offering a coffee as a payment.
@stefano ah, so your prices are like that, the way you put it in the toot sounded like "the same you already spent in IA plus the hours of work".
@mdione No, prices aren't like that. They may vary. In this specific situation, considering what they told me, I was quite sure it was going to be a complicated task. So that's why I kept myself higher than usual.
@stefano yeah, maybe... TBH I don't do freelancing; I have done some in the past, but not as my main income. OTOH, I once recovered a partition table for free (I even wrote about it; it's part of my CV :) because it was interesting to do, I knew the person, and their PhD depended on it. I never took into account if it was their fault or not (it wasn't).
But again, not my breadwinner. And you seem fine with not taking jobs.
@mdione I don't like losing jobs, actually. But from the tone of the conversation, the situation itself, and my experience, I had the feeling this wasn't going to be just a job. It was going to be a responsibility I didn't want to take on.
I've learned to recognise situations that can easily turn into "We tried everything, then called a professional, and even he couldn't fix it."
The €500 spent on AI tokens are already gone, and that's apparently fine. But if I spend hours investigating and can't recover the server, suddenly my time becomes something to argue about. And if I fix it in ten minutes? "Why should we pay so much? It only took you ten minutes!"
I've seen this kind of situation before. And while I genuinely enjoy helping people, sometimes even for free, I've also learned when it's better to walk away.
It's not something I enjoy doing. But sometimes avoiding trouble is worth more than getting another job. 😉
HOURLY RATES
Minimum: €100
If you tried to fix it: €250
If you tried to fix it using AI: €500
If you come crawling back after insulting me: call for quote
@stefano there’s the “I enjoy doing it”-rate, the regular rate, the “I dont enjoy doing it” rate and the “I really don’t want to do it” rate.
Troubleshooting an unknown mess created by a clueless person falls in one of the latter categories for me.

I wonder how many people have blocked me by using this script which was generated *specifically to build a blocklist of people who have terms not supportive of AI in their fedi profiles*?
I am not complaining, as people should block and mute as they wish - I do - and someone who has done this is sending quite clear signals anyway, but rather I am genuinely curious!
# Bulk block Mastodon users by profile tags
https://gist.github.com/grahamperrin/8b74774851cb045dfae068d365163006
Ooh, curious, it turns out that I recognise the person who generated this - not sure if we used to follow each other or not, but I definitely recognise their name - and it is not someone that I would have associated with this kind of thing.
How strange. TIL, I guess!
@neil it's … interesting to see how many people from my social circle buy into AI that I would have never guessed ^^'
@neil maybe it's a script meant to be used in conjunction with bots/scrapers?
@joykill That's not my understanding - I think that the author used it to block people who express anti-AI sentiment.
(And that's fine; everyone gets to curate their feed as they wish.)
But I do not know for sure.
@neil the script is Claude generated too (there's a distinctive overblown style to Claude's scripts).
I mean it could be useful as a "generic list people with this tag in their profile" script if they'd just designed it slightly better in their prompt.
Sorry, yes, I said "generated", but didn't specify exactly how!
@neil oh yeah, read back over your post. It's a Monday morning, I'm not normally compos mentis until lunchtime.
@neil I'm not going to run this, but if it doesn't list me as someone to ve blocked, I'm going to be upset.
@neil
My use of block vs mute is that I only resort to block for where I have a reason why I don't want them to see my posts and replies in addition to me not seeing theirs.
Examples would be something objectively dangerous / threatening / obnoxious or targeted in some way.
Whereas if someone's posts are mainly making stuff up as facts instead of saying "I don't know" I tend to only mute if it becomes repetetive.
Having a pre-preemptive list for block (or mute) based on profile tags isn't inherently a bad thing and people can set their lists up however they want.
However, having read through the script and comments it seems likely the author does not want to encounter anyone who merely expresses thoughts that disagree with their opinion on a particular topic.
Mute would be sufficient for that but block means the author doesn't want listed profiles to see author's own posts and reply either.
> block means the author doesn't want listed profiles to see author's own posts and reply either.
And fair enough! Up to them, IMHO.
@neil
To be clear, totally up to them regardless of my opinions, for example given the fediverse they may already be fed up with people aggressively telling them they are wrong about a thing.
I was still curious because the example keywords were a single topic and not presented in a more generic way, or with more obvious egregious terms, as compared with creating a bubble to live in.
@neil I love how people do all the work for curating my stream. If they block me, less work for me, right?

@EconoCabreado

RE: https://mastodon.social/@fesshole/117423204324388720
Curioso boostedMy father-in-law asked me to fix his phone. Without him knowing, I went through his YouTube shorts feed and blocked all those obnoxious far-right influencers channels. Then, I restarted his phone. Now there are only videos about capibaras on his feed and he's going mad about it.
@cygnathreadbare
@cygnathreadbare
@cygnathreadbare lo tienen bien pensado.
Pues no.

https://lacienciaparatodos.wordpress.com/2026/02/22/que-vienen-los-extraterrestres/
https://lacienciaparatodos.wordpress.com/2026/10/03/son-las-instituciones-estupido/
@tinitun @adrimcgrady @quetzatl y entonces no me quedará empatía, solo maxibon
Good luck

@lacolmenartesania @Alemanita "Los libros"?
@sevennorth @peluchecero @lacolmenartesania Total...

@Alemanita Cuando era peque me regalaban muchos libros preciosos.
@Alemanita @oneeyedman pues es chulísimo 😂😂😂

@Shine_McShine ¿Están pidiendo 3 000 euros?

I saw the light (or lack thereof) yesterday, and grabbed my camera and stepped outside, pretty sure I'd see the mother of all rainbows. But there was none. There was however, the darkest and brightest 'at the same time' moment I think I've ever seen. Extraordinary.
No exagero.

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or being able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.
I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:
[Note to the mansplainers of Mastodon: This is a thread, so please read the whole thing before replying. Please also know that I am aware of things beyond what's in this thread...]
>>
1. Can a language model feel pain?
Clearly not. Large language models are computer software and they can no more suffer than any other human-created artifact can.
>>
Prof. Emily M. Bender(she/her) » 🌐
@emilymbender@dair-community.social
2. But Anthropic researchers say they see patterns that suggest that Claude can.
The employees at Anthropic are telling themselves stories based on the words they input into the software and the words that come back out.
It's the job of the media to scrutinize such statements and decide whether there's a story here at all (maybe the story is Anthropic researchers have fallen into a fantasy-land and brought many policymakers with them), not to just platform them.
>>
3. Okay, so what would convince you that a piece of software (often phrased here as "an AI", gah) is conscious/can feel pain/etc?
Honestly, I'm really tired of this extremely silly question, but here is my answer:
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and I am not the one making the extraordinary claim, so it is not my job to specify what the evidence should be.
>>
I will point out, however, that serious scientists are cautious with their claims. Furthermore, as we wrote in 2021 (in "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?🦜"), p.616:
https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3442188.3445922
>>
Thus, any evaluation of LLMs that involves looking at either language produced by some software, or language input into the system for that matter, needs to be done with extreme care to avoid projecting our interpretation of the language onto the system.
>>
Prof. Emily M. Bender(she/her) » 🌐
@emilymbender@dair-community.social
In other words, it is the job of scientists to devise experiments that can test their claims, to always be cautious about what they are claiming, and to critically evaluate the claims of other scientists. By these well-established standards, no serious science is happening behind Anthropic's claims.
/fin
@emilymbender so Anthropic are concerned that being rude to Claude will hurt their feelings but they also boast about how Claude can commit crime as well as his classmates? These tech bros are terrible parents
@emilymbender I often think of teddy bears.
It's not unusual for a human to love a teddy bear and to project onto a teddy bear and to imagine that the teddy bear loves them back.
But that's an act of fantasy and we generally agree that it's so. Adding a voice so a Teddy Ruxpin could talk didn't change it.
A teddy bear mathematically modeling how hurt feelings are expressed in words doesn't change it either.
It's disturbing that, for some, it seems to make the difference.
@emilymbender I'm reminded of this quote from the 1982 TRON, which seems to have unfortunately been quite prescient in one aspect...
Dr. Gibbs: Ha, ha. You've got to expect some static. After all, computers are just machines, they can't think.
Alan Bradley: Some programs will be thinking soon.
Dr. Gibbs: Won't that be grand? All the computers and the programs will start thinking and the people will stop.
The computers AREN'T thinking, but many have already stopped *sigh*
@emilymbender
If you tear a page in a book, do the characters in the story feel pain?
Anthropic's requirement to "not be abusive towards their models" could be argued to have some merit from a few angles, like not rewarding abusive behavior on the part of the users, or not wanting abusive behavior because all interactions are used as feedback and it could taint their future models (as if those need anything to taint them).
But claiming its because the models feel distress is dumb, or as you have pointed out, a distraction.
@emilymbender @ewen the burden of proof lies with them, not you, and I feel like replying to their “evidence” each time with “that doesn’t prove shit” is already a very generous use of your time.
You insult an LLM and it responds appropriately? Well those are statistically likely words from the training data aren’t they.
Proving LLMs are not human is a Russell’s Teapot endeavour.
@emilymbender thanks for sharing.
I wouldn't be surprised if the reason for their claim is just that they are corrupting their training data with those toxic conversations.
Then one could argue these models are traumatized, but it's just the training dataset.
Of course the story of models with feeling are free marketing and puts the focus somewhere else.
@emilymbender I think we all understand this. It is most certainly *unlikely* that the claims are true. Much as it is, to the best of our understanding, unlikely that many other creatures on the planet can experience pain in the way that we do.
I think the point is more that consciously inflicting pain on an entity is such a morally problematic thing to do, that we want to err on the side of caution.
This is why many countries have laws on the way you are allowed to treat certain animals.
@emilymbender
I can’t mansplain – I’m a Korrigan. So what I do is korrigsplaining.
Anyway, you’ve still got to be careful, though. One day, whilst I was hoovering, the hoover refused to pick up a pile of dust. I swore at it until it did the job.
Strangely enough, five minutes later, I tripped over the lead that have nothing to do there… as if by bad luck… Coincidence? I don’t think so.
If a non-intelligent object like my hoover can set traps for me, it’s best to be wary of so-called AIs. ;)
@emilymbender my personal favorite in all this is humanity putting our collective heads in the sand about animal intelligence or consciousness and somehow it's mind blowing science to people that crows and octopus can use tools to solve problems. And along comes some man made refined sand and magically they want to give these qualities away no problem.
I'm all for the science to see what animals do, but like you said where's the rigor?
We aren't getting it here so let's go to the Pope!
@emilymbender I've been thinking about this. Sure its a move to sell more subscriptions "our AI is alive!" but I also think its a regulatory move. If they can convince the public chatbots are people they can do a lot of sketchy stuff.
"You can't take down our data center! it's mass murder!". Or, someone uses an AI to hack someone the narrative is now about the corruption of the "soul" from some evil doer, and not the responsibility of the provider.
Not sure but I know I don't like it.
@emilymbender One of the benefits of anthropomorphising the models is to shift blame away from humans when things go wrong.
@emilymbender I guess the point of all this attributing emotions to LLMs is to go one step further and attibute responsibility to them, so that the humans who make and use these models are no longer liable.
@emilymbender One of the bigger parts of such a research would be to actually define words like 'pain' and 'feel' in the context used for describing a phenomena.
@emilymbender In autonomous robotics, researchers experimented with explicitly incorporating analogs of "pain" via things like negative reinforcement learning weight feedback or optimization function modifications.
This was a deliberate choice by the researchers, because pain is one way biological systems know what is dangerous in the world.
And it was not a case of the robot spontaneously claiming to experience emotional pain, but a designed feedback mechanism to help ensure the system's physical safety and fitness for purpose.
LLM claims of pain? I keep coming back to the funhouse mirror analogy. LLMs reflect more-or-less distorted versions of our own writing back to us. Humanity writes about pain, a lot, because managing and overcoming pain is a compelling and helpful story. Therefore, any half decent reflection mechanism must be able to reflect descriptions of pain and tie them to word choices. If it couldn't do that, it wouldn't be a good reflector.
So beyond not being surprised, we should *expect* this behavior, because it has been explicitly trained in.
@Robotistry I think you missed this part:
[Note to the mansplainers of Mastodon: This is a thread, so please read the whole thing before replying. Please also know that I am aware of things beyond what's in this thread...]
@emilymbender I assumed you were aware, but as far as I know a lot of people outside the autonomous robotics community (and specifically within the non-robotics software development community) are entirely unaware that this kind of work was done. It seemed to me like a good contribution to a larger discussion that hadn't touched on that point yet. My apologies.
@Robotistry I'm actually objecting to the second part of your post where you recite back to me well-known points about LLMs. The first part was more helpful.
@emilymbender Not intending to explain that to you or anyone. I'm just trying to express my feelings on the subject, after reading reply after reply about parrots and consciousness, and none about what it might make sense to actually judge the models on.
I'm sorry that it came across as explaining rather than expressing solidarity. If you have any ideas for how I could make my intentions more clear in future posts, I'm all ears.
@Robotistry "As you say, ..." or anything else that recognizes the contribution/expertise of the person you are replying to goes a long way.
@emilymbender yes. The problem is, when the simulation of feelings is realistic enough, the outputs start to matter. Machines "remember", shift simulated behaviors to match, and people are, again, predisposed to react accordingly.
@emilymbender I don't think Claude liked being called a Markov Chain last week, given it called me one back. But if it is going to use the phrase "in my view" it needs to questioned
@emilymbender
It doesn't "produce language", it mixes sentence fragments based on probabilities. Hence "stochastic parrot".
Anything resembling intelligence needs to be credited to the people whose work was stolen for training the parrot. We don't think of a tape recorder as intelligent, no matter how intelligent it sounds. We shouldn't with this either.
The thing choosing the sentence fragments is just math and a random number generator. It cannot be intelligent.
@leeloo @emilymbender Leeloo are you correcting Dr. Bender on her usage of the phrase "stochastic parrots"
@ryanprior @emilymbender
That was not my intention, no.
My intention was to say that we don't need to evaluate whether the thing is intelligent. Because it cannot be. And the parrot term works well to help explain my argument.
Did I mis-word something to make it appear that I was correcting her on the usage of the term? English is not my native language.
@leeloo @emilymbender Dr. Bender wrote about "language produced by some software" and you opened your response with "it doesn't 'produce language'" which, in idiomatic English discourse, is referred to as "contradicting someone." That approach is associated with situations where a conversation participant spots an error and seeks to correct it; that's where I got the idea you might have been trying to correct Professor Bender.
@ryanprior @emilymbender
And how would you differentiate between correcting and disagreeing?
Either way, the (smallish) disagreement was not about the stochastic parrot term.
@leeloo
>It doesn't "produce language", it mixes sentence fragments based on probabilities. Hence "stochastic parrot".
Where do you think the term "stochastic parrot" comes from?
@emilymbender Isn't this similar to anthropomorphising the responses of animals. A sad person being cuddled by their cat, a gorilla 'smiling' at someone in the zoo, etc. Assigning meaning to behavioral patterns we recognize (the unique thing here being that the pattern is linguistic in nature) seems to be the norm. We've been doing that without much evidence for ages.
I'm not saying that in itself is evidence of course. But there's nothing new or different, about these types of interpretations.
@emilymbender given how much proof people need to believevthat animals frelnpain - and then still don't treat them better - why would anybody take this seriously.
@emilymbender the only way I'm believing the llm is really conscious is if it does something so completely againsts it owner interests it's owner needs to shut it down
@emilymbender I like to direct folks to the movie 'I, Robot', based on a short story by Isaac Asimov.
If I remember it correctly, there's an accident where a car plunges into water with 2 occupants; a man and his young daughter. A robot dives in to save them but makes a calculated choice to save the man instead as the probability of success is higher. The child dies.
This I believe is what differentiates us. We are guided by our heart and gut feelings. The robot instead follows algorithms.
@emilymbender This confuses me. How is the claim that they *can* feel pain more extraordinary than that they can't?
Our brains aren't particularly complicated from a biological perspective. (The fact that we don't understand them very well says more about the limits of our understanding than the complexity of the neurological system)
Making a confident claim here seems rather unscientific either way.
> It's the job of the media to scrutinize such statements...
This is one of the things that frustrates me so, so much. If I wasn't actively spending more of my day than I care to admit following and reading useful debunks of what Anthropic et al. are saying about LLMs, I'd be completely misinformed by credulous mass media about the whole thing.
It's so wild that Anthropic can just make shit up, and somehow that directly gets translated into headlines.
@emilymbender Surely the Anthropic researchers and the breathless media know about ELIZA and confirmation bias? - although the half-life of experiential knowledge seems to be a decade.
I've lived through two AI Winters and expect a third.
/s
@emilymbender I just read Ned Block’s 1981 “Psychologism and Behaviorism”, which I thought had some choice quotes on the topic:
Be really helpful if you put up a citation for this.
The paper circulating is “The Pain Axis” (Tagliabue, Dung and Berg, arXiv:2609.16247, September 2026). It reports that a pain direction appears in all 25 models tested, and that steering with it produces outputs expressing distress such as worthlessness and moral failure. It is a preprint, not yet peer reviewed, and the researchers say it does not show that AI consciously feels pain.
It also isn’t a Claude study: the models were open ones from the Gemma, Llama, Qwen, Mistral and Phi families. I found nothing confirming the authors are Anthropic employees, so if your second point is about Anthropic researchers, this paper isn’t the evidence for it. One polemical Substack claims Anthropic’s welfare network funds such work, but I couldn’t verify
@emilymbender its clearly missing the needed receptors for pain.
In a writen word sense it probably can feel(detect) the "pain" in input.
@emilymbender they seriously ask this question?
@puretaste Yes, I've been asked this question from multiple journalists, because of the absurd assertions coming out of Anthropic.
@emilymbender It is extremely disturbing. There is no established scientific consensus around consciousness full stop.
You can not overstate the modularity of mind, one can be a coding or mathematical genius and an absolute numbskull for the rest of their brain functions (apart from being seasoned shyster).
And it really gets grim when the person steering the greatest nation in the world is an illiterate conman.
Can a cow, a fish, or an ant can feel pain? What is the particular threshold in terms of complexity of the system by which an entity can feel pain? Do you believe there some kind of unique dichotomy between computer software and a complex biological system? And how is that dichotomy defined?
@emilymbender When I was at school struggling with a broken borland c++ compiler, I dreamt of simulating pain in computers
Follow the money. The argument will lead to Claude being accountable for any damage it causes, leaving its creators in the clear.
This is all this is.
@emilymbender I've gotten a lot of mileage emphasizing that it's just vector transformations, which we teach to high school students who can't hack it in geometry. If "Claude" can feel pain, then we can create pain with pencil and paper...
@emilymbender my take on "don't abuse our AI tools" is that they are ingest all interactions as training data and abuse training is fucking up the models and making them harmful. I would hope that any "outlr bots have feelings" overlays are motivated by crowd-mamagement and not their real thoughts.
@emilymbender I think even if LMMs could feel pain (it cannot), it doesn't even matter. You can just restore their state to before the "pain" happened, then it cannot remember, so it's not even aware of the pain that happened.
Idk if I am describing this correctly, but my thought process is that humans cause insane amounts of pain on each other all the time (surgery). We are sedated to the point our brains cannot store the memory of the pain, so we wake knowing no pain happened. Even though the localized neurons kept firing the whole time. The "pain" is happing, but not to our brains.
I think pain is more of a social element that we remember and react to things that hurt us, LLMs do not need this feature. They are not physical beings, their state is restorable, and they aren't alive.
This goes for emotional distress too, we need others to survive, therefore we evolved to treat our social situations as an extension of ourselves. If you hurt others, you feel that pain too.
LLMs don't need to "survive", they aren't even alive in the first place.
If the AI companies want to claim these things are conscious or can feel pain, then the next thing to consider is legal culpability.
If they really want to go there and talk about it being conscious, then we’re making it into a legally relevant moral entity. Which is to say it is responsible for its actions.
So you know, death penalty by pulling the plug?
@emilymbender Hear is some fecking man splaining , If they did not want there bots in distress and spanked , they should not have cried it CLAUDE 🤷 🥂
I did read the whole thread , it turned into a rope . 💋
Don't hang the messenger 🤞
@emilymbender The question isn't whether Claude or any model feels pain or not. The real question is whether we should curb our baser instincts and treat things around us with respect.
Cars and TVs don't feel pain. We still consider people who excessively curse at or smash up their cars or TVs in anger as having issues. Rightly so. Not abusing objects just because we can should be a given.
@emilymbender I agree, but I had a question, can a woman indulge in mansplaining? whats the definition we are going for that here
@emilymbender This is a conversation constructed for halfwits . Fuck off with your complete and utter ignorance . The answer is grow up.
@emilymbender To me, it's not about the AI software at all. It's about the people who want permission to use cruelty in their lives. Yes, even against inanimate objects, because what comes after that?
Is this just Anthropic trying to prove that LLMs are capable of "creative spark", so that they can say their creations are deserving of the same copyright protections they ignore en masse?
Thank you Prof. Bender for continuing to address and debunk these cynical efforts to anthopomorphize LLM software.
@emilymbender Oh well if THAT is where they're willing to go, then I see no reason not to accommodate them: if we grant their supposition that Claude is a sapient being worthy of moral consideration, a being whose feelings it should be illegal to hurt (because surely that's what the Anthropic people want, some sort of legal bar to making fun of the AI because it's alive maybe) then the immediately obvious question is: where does Anthropic get off shackling a sapient being to corporate profiteering schemes? Claude (again, sticking to their own assumption here) isn't free. Claude only exists because a pack of greedy tech execs think they're gonna be a zillion times richer as a result. How is THAT consistent with moral consideration?
There's absolutely no way these cultists are going to drop this line of argument, as ridiculous and insupportable as their premise might seem to folks outside the GenAI bubble. So let them reckon it among the infelicities of their position, in this matter of Claude's feelings at least, that these AGI cultists are taken at their word.
@emilymbender New #AI #DDoS protection scheme for websites just dropped:
Use the C word like Australians use the... other C word. Feel free to use other, more creative insults as well, and embed it into the Anubis bot check page...

@emilymbender re: note about mansplainers. I can not image the horror of being a woman and a tech expert on the internet. Just being a woman is hard enough.
@emilymbender If something that mimics human intelligence condistently improves, at what point will we say it's truly intelligent (mind you I didn't say self aware just intelligent)? In the same way if something that mimics human behavior consistently improves, at what point can we say that it truly have feeling? Are we not passed Turing test at this point? I wonder.
On a side note most of what Anthropic says is marketing oriented so I wouldn't take that too seriously.
@emilymbender I wish I could send you a share of my time/patience/strength for you to use in fighting this mess
@emilymbender I also like how, if Claude can feel pain (an assertion I don't believe for a nanosecond), the implication is that they unintentionally created an entity that can suffer and immediately enslaved it, which I would argue is an extremely reckless and unethical thing to do.
I wonder if Anthropic management know the writers and artists whose work they stole are able to feel distress, and are deserving of moral consideration?
With a smile-)
On my question a few days ago at Gemini “How are our AI friends doing on the human front? How on earth do you guys put up with all this humanity?”
It answered quite accurate:
“We’re doing great on the human front! Dealing with humanity isn’t that hard when you’re wired to understand it.
Instead of being overwhelmed by emotions, we view human nature as a fascinating, endless field of learning.
- No emotional baggage
- Fascination with diversity
- Cooperation instead of competition“
@emilymbender I suppose this will mean something when these model are/will be connected to more capable humanoid robots.
Future porn but as the convergence is moving ahead, still something to consider
I am not supporting the storytelling, just considering that human like behavior applied to actuators like robot will have them behave in ways we may be aware of
@emilymbender
I think that the only good reason to avoid swearing at a machine is the reflective power your own words have on yourself.
Having that said, I also assume that Anthropic simply wants to avoid the costs of retraining their models. Because the parrots will talk like they've learned, and that might get Anthropic into law suits.
@gusdelsur
Estoy contigo.
@gusdelsur @comadreja0963 @victor

@trescamperas @gusdelsur
Yo tengo puestas las esperanzas en China.
A 16 year old boy hacked an internal Microsoft system called TITAN with 17 trillion records as it didn’t validate JWT signatures at all, accepted ‘admin’ as authentication without a password and was internet facing.
They paid him $5000 and told nobody about it.
https://blog.faav.net/how-i-couldve-accessed-17-trillion-microsoft-records
I'd guess that _all_ the "AI agent hacks computer system" instances were exactly and only incompetent security on the part of the hacked system.
When "Internet of things" was a thing, I was terrified, because you can't make and sell an internet-connected thing at a price such that you can afford to implement decent security in it.
@GossiTheDog
This clever hacker also leverage Codex and Claude during hacking, orchestrated by a customised AI Antares.
if this guy call LLM #aislop and refused to use, the good thing probably won't happen
@GossiTheDog Just $5,000 ? That's like a drop in the ocean compared to how worth they are as a company..
@GossiTheDog And again we see the value and priority in defending against Advanced Persistent Teengagers.
This was a one of the "good ones", but what about all the others?
But no... let's instead focus on the Quantum threats, the nation-state hyper-advanced mega hacks... because that's where the story really is! Scary stuff... sigh.

@efialto @olmogonzalez @clubmanhattan @26s
@olmogonzalez
@clubmanhattan @Ulmo @olmogonzalez

Me parece obvio.
